Grrreat news!

I have great news -- I got a new job! I recently accepted a job offer from UBC. (...Aha, they hired a grad from rival SFU! ;)) The job primarily involves managing the publications and ads, from creative conception to content development to design and production then distribution. I'll be managing the workflow, and will be working with writers, designers, photographers, printers, cool geeks, etc. It has elements of PR and strategies too, so I'm happy. Very happy, as a matter of fact. The position is vastly more creative than my previous job; it allows me to do both writing and design.

I also like the fact that it's with UBC--I mean, it's one of the finest universities in Canada, and as an organization it is named a Top 30 Employer in terms of work environment, benefits, etc.

I'm very happy. Now I can look back and be thankful for all the rejections I had prior to bagging this job. (Funny how life works out, eh!) Before the UBC opportunity came along, I tried out with...uhm, let's see... four other organizations. With a couple of them I came so close, only to lose to a slightly stronger competitor. One interview was quite a disaster. Another interview involved a high-power woman with 10 inches of makeup on her face (ugh!). I'll talk about 'em more in a later post. For now, allow me to celebrate! :)

Miss Magic Eyes

MY COVER GIRL:
A Vogue model she ain't,
but what the freakin' heck,

I'm inspired.

I'm currently producing a fictitious travel magazine which I modelled after my all-time favourite, National Geographic. (Nerdy, I know... but hey, what's wrong with having a stuffy, high-brow taste? ;)) My magazine may be fictitious, but it's a real project. I conceptualized an actual lineup of editorial content; I did the creative design (using InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and what not); I even custom-designed some hypothetical ads. When it's all done, I'll have it professionally printed at a shop. Just like a true magazine. Well, almost.

Why all the fuss about this glossy rag, you wonder? My, it's for my portfolio. It's been a while since I last produced a magazine-style project, so I thought I'd update my portfolio with a project like this. (Like I said recently, I'm gearing up for my next career moves -- that explains the portfolio madness. I think I'm prime for a more creative and strategic role. Maybe it's just my inflated ego talking, but really, I'm ready and I deserve it.)

So there I was, searching and searching for magazine-worthy photos online... and then bam! pow! yeeehah! -- I saw this beeeeeeeeeautiful face of a little Nepalese girl. Hello, cover girl! I chirped, looking deep into the "magic eyes" of this angelic image on my screen. Truly, she has one of the most beautiful faces I've ever seen in my life: I'm breathless.

Move over, Tyra's "top model" bitches and wannabes, because it's settled: Miss Magic Eyes will be on the cover of my magazine. :)


Disclaimers: Any photo that I steal or use in my magazine is purely for personal purposes only. The said magazine and "sampled" photos will never be used commercially, nor distributed widely. The whole project is created with the intent of showcasing my layout, design and print production skills, not photography. Be assured, I will never pass off someone else's work as my own. (I will include photographers' credits, don't worry.)

That said, I commend all photographers whose genius works appear all over the Internet--free for admirers and creative aspirers like me to use them as inspiration. :)

Hours after posting this, I found out that the photo was that of a boy, not girl. My apologies. But boy or girl, "Miss Magic Eyes" is still cute.
